Can my service dog accompany me onto the beach?
Bona fide service animals accompanying persons with disabilities are permitted on the Boardwalk Promenade and beaches. A service animal is a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. Service animals are working animals, not pets. Examples of potentially bona fide service animals include guide dogs, hearing dogs, mobility dogs, medical alert dogs, and psychiatric service dogs. A service dog vest and identification tag are not prima facie proof that your dog is a bona fide service animal. Although we are not permitted to ask about your disability, staff are trained to make limited inquiries permitted by the ADA in order to determine whether your dog is a bona fide service animal. A “comfort dog,” “emotional support dog,” or “therapy dog” that is not individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability is not a bona fide service animal. All service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered unless these devices interfere with the service animal’s work or the individual’s disability prevents using these devices. Service animal fraud is punishable by law!
